Dear CPF member,
An Insider’s Tip: Final Call To Board The “Top-Up Train”
For many people, the year end is a period to wind down, holiday and buy presents for loved ones.
At CPF Board, we are especially busy. Why?
Well, this is the time of the year when many members give their loved ones or themselves the special gift of a CPF Top-up.
So what’s the benefit? Did you know that every dollar (in cash) used to top up your CPF Account or that of your loved ones by 31 December 2010, entitles you to tax relief (of up to $7,000 for next year’s tax assessment)! Please note that you can only top up if your CPF Account has not reached the top-up limit.
How much tax relief? You could enjoy tax relief of up to $14,000. Your tax savings is $1,190 if you are in the 8.5% tax bracket. Or $1,960 if you are in the 14% tax bracket! To find out exactly how much the tax benefit is, please use the Interactive Guide to Top Up the Special/Retirement Account*.
Remember: Top-ups to the Special / Retirement Account currently earn at least 4% interest p.a.! Where else can you get this interest rate?
And that’s why we are kept busy this time of the year. Always ready to serve you, and your loved ones. Ordinary account?

You can also enjoy tax relief of up to $7,000 per calendar year, if you or your employer use cash to make top-ups for you. You can enjoy an additional tax relief of up to $7,000 per calendar year if you use cash to make top-ups for your siblings, spouse, parents or grandparents. To qualify for tax relief for cash top-ups for siblings/spouse, the sibling/spouse must have either (i) earned $4,000 or less in the preceding year or (ii) is handicapped.
Ordinary account?”
Tax resident or non-resident?
Different tax rates apply for tax residents and non-residents. You will be treated as a tax resident for a particular Year of Assessment (YA) if you are a:
Singaporean; or
Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR) if you have established your permanent home in Singapore; or
Foreigner who stayed/worked in Singapore for 183 days or more in previous year (excludes director of a company).
Otherwise, you will be treated as a non-resident of Singapore for tax purposes.
